The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office released the names of two Salinas teens found fatally shot early Monday at Moss Landing State Beach.

Marco Antonio Perez, 15, and Nathaniel Flores, 13, were pronounced dead at the scene after the shooting was reported shortly before 2 a.m. in the area of Jetty Road in Moss Landing.

On Tuesday, Salinas Union High School District officials said the two boys were students in their district.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share that members of our district student community were among those who lost their lives in the tragic incident that occurred early Monday morning in Moss Landing,” Zandra Jo Galvan, the district’s superintendent, said in a letter to district families.

Two other people were injured in the shooting, which is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office and California State Parks police.

Few details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting have been released.

On Monday, Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Cmdr. Andres Rosas said authorities were not yet ready to declare the deaths homicides and said there were several unknown elements to the case as of Monday afternoon, including a potential motive or identity of a suspect.

Timing of incident clarified

Monterey County sheriff’s deputies, California Highway Patrol officers, and state park rangers responded to a person’s report of hearing gunshots at about 2 a.m. The Sheriff’s Office had earlier said the shooting happened just after midnight.

The two teens were found dead at the scene and a third victim was brought to the hospital with injuries described as not-life-threatening.

A fourth victim arrived at the hospital on their own while the response was underway. Rosas said he was unsure about the nature of their injuries or their status as of Monday afternoon.

Chief Ranger Mike Dippel said the beach closes at sundown, but a gate that would keep vehicles from entering the area is frequently left open because there are not enough staff to open it early in the morning.

A nearby scene at the beach that appeared to have been a party was being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office, which is leading the case at the request of State Parks, but Rosas said it was unknown if the crime scene was connected to the site of the party.

He said there was no active shooter in the area when law enforcement arrived, leading the Sheriff’s Office to declare there was no ongoing threat to the community.
