Marin County Special Projects

We often work collaboratively on projects that bring more context, deeper coverage or investigative journalism to our readers. Below is a collection of stories on housing, climate change, culture, civic engagement and criminal justice reform that we plan to follow in the months ahead.

Inside Out

Our Inside/Out prison news coverage from San Quentin Rehabilitation Center in Marin County delves into the complex issues surrounding the penal system. Prison journalist Steve Brooks was selected to participate in the inaugural cohort of the California Local News Fellowship in 2024 as a part-time contributing writer for Bay City News Foundation. He covers issues of incarceration, criminal justice and human rights. We also highlight reports from San Quentin News, the countryโ€™s first prison newsroom founded in 1940 as those incarcerated journalists find voice in stories that break barriers and challenge perceptions from the inside out.
