As technology changes, journalism must change with it. How we gather information and report it — and how we sustain our operations — is fundamentally changing with artificial intelligence. Bay City News Labs is the innovation arm of Bay City News Foundation. Its aim is to test new technologies, including AI tools, to help the news industry with research, workflow and delivery of news that matters.

We welcome partnerships with:

  • AI Frontier companies and developers
  • Funders who support a sustainable, human-centered local media industry that practices responsible journalism
  • Other media outlets who are keen to partner on experiments that help journalists do their jobs and earn a living in the new AI ecosystem.

What’s next on the horizon?

While we continue to test new ideas, AI technology is galloping ahead. The current ecosystem promotes the summary of news without always guiding users to click through to news websites. That jeopardizes audience traffic, threatens the value of intellectual property and challenges the very existence of many small news outlets. We want to explore some solutions to this conundrum at Bay City News Labs. The takeaways will be shared publicly so others can benefit.
