Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park in Monterey County, closed by a massive wildfire for two months, will reopen Friday, state officials said.
The Timber Fire consumed more than 25,000 acres southeast of Loma Vista, charring about 517 acres in the park, including numerous trails, California State Parks said.
The park, about 26 miles south of Carmel on state Highway 1, served as a base camp and incident command post for Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service and emergency responders, the parks agency said.
“Visitors will once again have access to the campground, day-use areas, Big Sur Lodge, Redwood Grove Boardwalk and several trails and facilities,” the agency said Friday.
Some areas of the park are still affected by fire-related closures.
“Some trails will remain closed as State Parks staff continue assessing fire damage and addressing hazards to ensure visitor safety,” the agency said.
Burned areas can present hazards including unstable trees, falling rocks and debris, damaged trails and erosion, according to the agency.
