Hashi Market, which bills itself as a combination fresh food supermarket, mini department store and catering service, is reaching beyond its New York City base to Cupertino Crossroads shopping center.

The market, which opened Saturday, took over a retail space occupied until 2023 by Sprouts Farmers Market, city officials said.

“Cupertino continues to evolve while staying true to what makes it special,” said Mayor Kitty Moore. “We’re happy to welcome Hashi Market and look forward to seeing them become part of the community.”

While Cupertino is the company’s first California outpost, it won’t be alone for long: the Hashi is planning locations in San Mateo, Milpitas and Union City. Outside New York, it has shops in Massachusetts and Colorado.

The Japanese market’s debut comes as several other Asian-themed businesses move through Cupertino’s permitting process, the city said, including Kunjip Express, EE Sushi, CoCo Ichibanya Curry House and DuoDuo Snacks.
