The Monterey County Government Center in Salinas that has been shut down for two weeks due to a sewer line malfunction is set to reopen as soon as early next week, the county said Thursday.

The county announced the center’s closure on Sept. 3 after an extensive sewer line malfunction occurred that mostly affected the building’s first floor, which contains customer service for several departments. The closure was needed to allow cleanup and remediation work and ensure the safety of employees and the public, the county said.

Don't miss out on Bay Area news, delivered to your inbox twice a week.

The tentative reopening is set for “early to mid-week,” according to the county.

Contractors and other environmental consultants tackled the problem for the most part, but during their work they discovered another issue that needs fixing — the building’s fire sprinkler system. The county said it has been decided to push the reopening to next week so that “all systems can be certified completely ready for regular business.”

Until then, services usually provided by the Government Center at 168 W. Alisal St. will continue with some relocations.

— Treasurer-Tax Collector visitors should follow posted signs at the Government Center for information on the current service location.

— The Clerk of the Board of Supervisors and Assessor-Clerk-Recorder’s Office will have staff in Conference Room E-118, next to U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren’s office, in the East Wing at 142 W. Alisal St. on the first floor.

— The Public Defender’s Office will continue helping the public by phone at 831-755-5058 and in person at the Law Library at 142 W. Alisal St., Suite E-107. Staff will be available from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m.

Katy St. Clair, Bay City News

Katy St. Clair got her start in journalism by working in the classifieds department at the East Bay Express during the height of alt weeklies, then sweet talked her way into becoming staff writer, submissions editor, and music editor. She has been a columnist in the East Bay Express, SF Weekly, and the San Francisco Examiner. Starting in 2015, she begrudgingly scaled the inverted pyramid at dailies such as the Vallejo Times-Herald, The Vacaville Reporter, and the Daily Republic. She has her own independent news site and blog that covers the delightfully dysfunctional town of Vallejo, California, where she also collaborates with the investigative team at Open Vallejo. A passionate advocate for people with developmental disabilities, she serves on both the Board of the Arc of Solano and the Arc of California. She lives in Vallejo.
