The FBI is offering a $20,000 reward to help find whoever is responsible for a mass shooting late last month in Santa Clara County that killed one person and injured several others, authorities announced Wednesday.
The money is for information leading to the identification and arrest of the people responsible for the shooting, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
The FBI has also joined the investigation and is providing “significant federal resources and technical support,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The July 25 shooting killed one person and injured six during a large, “unsanctioned” pop-up-style birthday party that drew hundreds to a rural property near Hale and Miramonte avenues in Coyote Valley, northwest of Morgan Hill.
Just prior to the shooting, sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene to investigate reports of intoxicated people in the street and a person throwing bottles at cars at about 10:15 p.m.
When they arrived, deputies encountered partygoers running from just-fired gunshots, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies provided medical assistance to the victims until paramedics arrived and declared one person dead.
Several other police departments and the California Highway Patrol also responded to coordinate the scene and establish an area for people at the gathering to make contact with their families or friends.
“With hundreds of people in attendance, someone knows something,” said Sheriff Robert Jonsen. “We’ve asked for the FBI’s assistance, and we are calling on our community to help identify those responsible for this heinous crime.”
