A kite surfer who somehow became stranded on a remote Santa Cruz County beach over the weekend kept his wits and turned to his natural surroundings to alert rescuers to his predicament.

The surfer used rocks on the beach to spell out “HELP,” Cal Fire officials said in a social media post on X. A private helicopter flying over the beach, south of Davenport Landing, spotted the message and called authorities, Cal Fire said.
