Latest Stockton News

Stockton is one of the most racially diverse large cities in America, with many untold stories on issues that matter. With support from the Report for America program and Catchlight, we have a dedicated team committed to covering Stockton and greater San Joaquin County.

Covering Our Communities

Based in the city, reporter Victoria Franco and photojournalist Harika Maddala are delving into the changing economy, education, and housing and homelessness. A special project with the Starling Lab to produce authenticated images and data has created a unique opportunity to document the homelessness crisis in the region.

Starling Photo Authentication Project

Bay City News created an authenticated โ€œtime capsuleโ€ of images documenting the Bay Areaโ€™s homelessness crisis while transparently tracking data from relevant government agencies. We partnered with the Starling Lab for Data Integrity, a research lab anchored at Stanford University and the University of Southern California. The lab’s goal is to advance authentication tools for photojournalism, underscoring the importance of accuracy and combating misinformation and disinformation.

Resources for the Homeless

Stockton accounts for 60 percent of the homeless population throughout San Joaquin County. Bay City News has created a list of resources to help homeless people seek housing assistance and free food services daily.
