Two Bay Area teams have made it to the U.S. championship of Little League’s Intermediate 50/70 World Series, an international tournament for youth baseball players of up to 13 years old that will wrap up this weekend.
Granada from Livermore and Bollinger Canyon from San Ramon are the two teams playing in the U.S. final at 5 p.m. Saturday at Max Baer Park in Livermore. Teams from Puerto Rico and South Korea will play in the international final at 1 p.m. Saturday, and the winners of both games will play Sunday at 6 p.m. in the international championship.
Bollinger Canyon won the Little League District 57 championship to earn the host team berth, while Granada defeated a team from Moorpark in Southern California in the West Region championship in Arizona last week to make it to the 12-team tournament held annually in Livermore.
The 50/70 name comes from the 50-foot pitching distance and 70-foot distances between bases, longer lengths than the standard Little League field for younger players.
The Bollinger Canyon and Granada teams are not the only ones from the Bay Area going far in a Little League tournament this year.
San Ramon Valley Little League from Danville last week won the Northern California regional tournament for children up to 12 years old, and next plays in the West Region tournament in San Bernardino starting Sunday for a chance to make it to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
