In Concord’s race for the District 4 City Council seat, challenger Pablo Benavente pulled ahead of incumbent Edi Birsan when Contra Costa County released its latest vote counts late last week.
Birsan was ahead after Election Night by four votes. By Friday afternoon’s count, he trailed Benavente by 89 votes, 3,274 (35.51%) to 3,185 (34.55%).
Benavente, who is currently a government relations professional in the tech industry, has worked with the Economic Opportunity Council of Contra Costa and served as chair of the board of Monument Impact, a community-based nonprofit focused on immigrant, refugee, and low-income communities in Concord.
Birsan was first elected in 2012 and is currently serving as mayor, a position appointed by his fellow councilmembers that rotates annually.
Myles Burks was still in third with 19.25% (1,725) votes) and Matthew Dashner is in fourth with 10.68% (985 votes).
There was still nothing close about Concord’s District 2 council race, where incumbent Carlyn Obringer had a commanding lead over Eric Antonick, 75.68% (6,734 votes) to 24.32% (2,164 votes).
