The race to win the seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors representing the city’s Richmond District is tied, according to the latest numbers released Thursday from the election earlier this week.
Incumbent Supervisor Connie Chan and challenger Marjan Philhour both had 11,001 votes apiece after the first three rounds of ranked choice voting for the District 1 seat, according to the latest unofficial results released by the city’s Department of Elections late Thursday afternoon.
Votes are still being counted in the race and the Department of Elections has up to 30 days after Election Day to certify final results.
Chan first won the seat in 2020 over Philhour in 2020 in another close race decided by just 125 votes after multiple ranked choice rounds. She was a legislative aide for Supervisor Aaron Peskin and previously worked for the city’s Recreation and Park Department and the San Francisco Zoo prior to her election.
Philhour, a native of the district who lost her first bid for the seat in 2016 against Chan’s predecessor, founded a consulting business and is a liaison to the Parent Association at San Francisco University High School.
Her campaign was boosted by the opposition to Chan by the political action committee Coalition to Grow San Francisco, known as GrowSF, which opposed multiple incumbents in this election cycle and raised over $82,000 in an effort to defeat her.
She focused her messaging on public safety and opposed Proposition K, which proposed closing the Upper Great Highway seven days a week, and led the field in fundraising with over $507,000.
Chan had a long list of prominent backers, including House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, U.S. Rep. Ted Lieu, the San Francisco Labor Council and California Nurses Association, among others.
