A $1 million vintage concept car was destroyed in a fire along with the trailer it was being towed in Sunday in Monterey, minutes after it had been on public display at a nearby car show.

Crews with the Monterey Fire Department responded to the vehicle fire at about 7 p.m. on the Munras Avenue off-ramp from northbound Highway 1, according to fire officials.

When they arrived, they found the trailer engulfed in flames and the fire spreading to nearby vegetation.

While the blaze was quickly doused and the tow vehicle saved, the trailer with a 1979 Ford Ghia Probe 1 concept car valued at approximately $1 million were gutted, according to fire officials.

The car had been included as part of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance earlier in the day and was being trailered home to Arroyo Grande when it was involved in an accident, according to an Instagram post from the Scott Grundford Company, owners of the vehicle for more than 20 years.

“We are forever lucky to be a part of this car’s history, however tragic this event was, and we will bring what remains of the car home to Arroyo Grande so the car can remain next to the Ghia/Ford bodied prototypes in our collection,” the company said in its post.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury but no other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to fire officials.
