A pedestrian safety advocacy group is renewing its call for more speed cameras near Golden Gate Park after a fatal traffic collision claimed the life of an elderly man this week.
San Francisco police responded at 5:23 a.m. Wednesday to the intersection of Fulton Street and Arguello Boulevard for a 72-year-old pedestrian who was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police would not confirm the victim’s condition Thursday. However, the group Walk San Francisco, whose Slow Our Streets campaign aims to reduce traffic speeds in an effort to reduce pedestrian deaths, said he later succumbed to his injuries. His name was not immediately available.
“Our hearts go out to this man’s loved ones and community,” Walk San Francisco executive director Jodie Medeiros said in a statement. “No one’s life should end this way. We should all be able to cross the street safely.”
The group noted that Fulton Street “is particularly dangerous, with serious issues with speeding and frequent crashes” and called for speed cameras to be installed along the corridor on the north border of Golden Gate Park.
“With or without a speed camera, much more must be done to bring down speeds on Fulton especially because of its proximity to the park, schools, and senior centers,” Medeiros said.
