Investigations are under way after two “concerning encounters” between adults and students walking home from an elementary school that draws from the Alto and Scott Valley neighborhoods of Mill Valley, police said Friday.
No physical contact or injuries were reported from the incidents that occurred in the past two weeks involving children from Edna Maguire Elementary School, police said.
“In both instances, the students encountered adults who attempted to engage them in conversation which made them feel uncomfortable,” police said in a press release. “In both encounters, the students separated themselves from the interactions and reported what happened to their parents.”
It’s unclear whether the incidents were related or involved “criminal intent,” police said, they have increased patrols in the area during school arrival and dismissal times.
Separately, the Mill Valley School District has notified families of an incident reported to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office involving three adults who were arguing on a bike path in the presence of a student.
Parents were advised to “talk with your children about remaining aware of their surroundings and taking simple precautions when walking or biking to and from school,” police said.
Children do not need to engage with strangers, answer questions, share personal information, or go anywhere with someone they don’t know, police said.
“If something makes them uncomfortable, they should trust their instincts, move to a safe location, and tell a trusted adult,” police said. “Whenever possible, walking or biking with a friend is also encouraged.”
Anyone with information related to these incidents is encouraged to contact Detective Zell at 415-389-4100. Anyone witnessing suspicious activity or an immediate safety concern should call 911.
