State Sen. Scott Wiener was leading San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan in the early returns from Tuesday’s election to replace House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi in Congress.
Wiener had 55% of the vote in the race to represent the District 11 seat in Congress compared to 45% for Chan. Both are Democrats who were the top-two finishers in the June primary race.
Pelosi announced in November 2025 that she would retire after serving in Congress for nearly 40 years and being the first woman elected by her peers to be speaker of the House of Representatives, a role she served twice from 2007-2011 and from 2019-2023.
Wiener served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors before being elected to the state Senate in 2016.
Pelosi earlier this year endorsed Chan, who represents the Richmond District and other neighborhoods on the western side of the city.
Wiener did not post on social media about the results in the race, while Chan said in a statement that the results remained too close to call.
“There are still votes to count, and we will let that process unfold. We are proud, and we have every reason to keep our heads high,” she said.
On Wednesday, the San Francisco Department of Elections will publish the number of ballots that still need to be counted. It will also post updated results at 4 p.m. each day through Nov. 13.
