In East Contra Costa County, a bond measure intended to repair and improve aging high schools appears to have failed in early results from Tuesday’s election.
Measure X for Liberty Union High School District, which includes high schools in both Brentwood and Oakley, would have authorized $165 million in bonds, raising $11.3 million each year to fix things like roofs, plumbing and asbestos — while covering other facility upgrades.
The measure needed 55% of the vote to pass and only had 46.91% as of early Tuesday evening. The Contra Costa County Registrar of Voters is expected to release another update at midnight, with the next scheduled update set for Friday at 5 p.m.
Proponents of the measure called the repairs critical and cited upgrades needed for student success. But bond measures for LUHSD have previously faced staunch opposition in East County, with critics pointing out high taxes from other measures and a 2016 Measure U that was supposed to address aging facilities and asbestos.
