People held at the Santa Cruz County jail will have increased access to free video visits with family and friends for the next 30 days amid increased U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in the region, county officials announced.

The Sheriff’s Office has temporarily increased the number of complimentary video visits from two to six per week.

The expansion was negotiated with the jail’s video visitation provider at no additional cost to the county, according to the Santa Cruz County Public Defender’s Office.

The Public Defender’s Office welcomed the decision, noting that some families may be hesitant to visit the jail in person because of concerns surrounding increased immigration enforcement.

“We appreciate the Sheriff’s responsible, compassionate approach to keeping the people we serve connected to their families and natural support systems,” said Public Defender Heather Rogers.

“Families should not have to choose between fear and staying connected to someone they love,” Rogers said. “This expansion is a practical step that recognizes the importance of those bonds.”
