A man fatally stabbed, allegedly by his coworker, at a business in a San Rafael shopping center earlier this week was identified Thursday by police.

Mathew Lambdin, a 27-year-old San Rafael resident, died in the stabbing reported shortly after 1 p.m. Monday at the Northgate One Shopping Center.

San Rafael police said responding officers found Lambdin suffering from a stab wound in the 700 block of Las Gallinas Avenue and he later died at a hospital.

Based on the victim’s clothing, investigators determined he was an employee at a business in the shopping center, and shortly afterward, 20-year-old Richmond resident Justin Gutierrez-Navarette contacted authorities to turn himself in, according to police.

A preliminary investigation found that Gutierrez-Navarette and Lambdin had an ongoing dispute that turned physical when the stabbing occurred Monday, and that Lambdin fled through the rear entrance of the business before collapsing outside, police said.

Gutierrez-Navarette was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of homicide. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call San Rafael police at 415-485-3000 or to send a tip online.
