The parents of a little girl who died due to an asthma attack in a home allegedly infested with mold, cockroaches, garbage and pet feces have been charged with felony child neglect, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.
The 8-year-old girl’s uncle is also charged with sexually molesting a child in the home.
The girl, whose first name was Aurora, died on May 17. The District Attorney’s Office alleges her parents waited 8 hours before seeking medical help for their daughter, who was in serious medical distress.
According to prosecutors, parents Gabrielle Hanson, 32, and Jacob Randolph, 39, had been warned multiple times by medical and social service workers that the conditions in their home were dangerous for their seven young children.
On May 13 just before 10 a.m., officers and fire department personnel responded to the home on Lancelot Lane to help Aurora. She was taken to the hospital and six other children at the house, from the ages of two months to 17 years old, were taken into protective custody.
Four days later, Aurora was declared deceased. A medical examiner determined her cause of death to be a lack of oxygen to the brain due to severe asthma with acute lung injury in the setting of human rhinovirus/enterovirus infection. Medical neglect was determined to be a significant factor in her death, and the manner of death was homicide, prosecutors said.
The investigation into Aurora’s death also led to child sex abuse charges against another adult in the home, Jonathan Hanson, 44. Hanson is charged with two counts of molestation and one count of possessing explicit phone videos of a girl between the ages of 11 to 15.
Gabrielle Hanson, stepmother to the sexual assault victim, was also charged with knowing about it and doing nothing to stop it.
‘Bugs just crawl on me’
Investigators outlined a house of horrors.
Aurora and her siblings lived in squalid and dangerous conditions for years, as documented by county social service workers, prosecutors said. The children had been living in unsanitary conditions since at least 2019 and significant cockroach infestations were noted. The insects affected areas and items used by the children, including everyday household items, bedding, and medical equipment.
In February 2025, Aurora was brought to the emergency room by a relative for asthma, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. While at the hospital, a bug fell from her shoe and a cockroach was seen crawling on her, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
“Oh yeah, bugs just crawl on me,” she reportedly told hospital staff.
She was also reported to smell like cat urine, appeared seriously underweight and pale, and said she was hungry and had not eaten.
Detectives observed that Aurora’s asthma medical equipment was not being properly maintained. Her prescribed inhaler was not located inside the residence during either of the two search warrants. Detectives eventually found a dirty, poorly maintained inhaler spacer that was missing the rubber seal designed to prevent medication from leaking. Detectives also found a respiratory mask that contained cockroaches.
The parents were arraigned on Tuesday and were given supervised release on their own recognizance. Jonathan Hanson, the brother of Aurora’s mother, is being held in jail without bail.
All three defendants are next due in court on Nov. 20.
