A 20-year-old Richmond man was arrested for allegedly stabbing and killing a coworker at a business in a San Rafael shopping center on Monday afternoon, according to police.

Justin Gutierrez-Navarette is accused of the stabbing reported shortly after 1 p.m. Monday at the Northgate One Shopping Center.

Officers arrived and found a male victim suffering from a stab wound in the 700 block of Las Gallinas Avenue, and he later died at a hospital, San Rafael police said Tuesday.

Based on the victim’s clothing, investigators determined that he was an employee at a business in the shopping center, and shortly afterward Gutierrez-Navarette contacted authorities to turn himself in, according to police.

A preliminary investigation found that Gutierrez-Navarette and the victim had an ongoing dispute that turned physical on Monday when the stabbing occurred, and that the victim fled through the rear entrance of the business before collapsing outside, police said.

Gutierrez-Navarette has been booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of homicide, and the name of the victim has not been released.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call San Rafael police at 415-485-3000 or to send a tip online.
