SF public defender alleges DA covered up assault by police officers in 2025

The San Francisco Public Defender’s Office releases police body-worn camera footage showing a SFPD officers pulling the hair of Kevon Gibson, 33, who was hospitalized for several days afterward in San Francisco, Calif., on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2026. In an attempt to justify the beating, the officers later lied to the District Attorney’s Independent Investigations Bureau (IIB) by claiming that Gibson assaulted them. One officer falsely claimed he was bitten, another lied that he was punched multiple times in the head and that Gibson wrapped his radio cord around his neck, and a third officer falsely alleged his thumb was almost broken. The San Francisco Public Defender’s Office alleged Thursday that the District Attorney’s Office tried to cover up an assault by police officers in August 2025.

Prosecutors charged the victim of the assault, 33-year-old Kevon Gibson, with crimes he did not commit and misled the jury and the public about the facts of the case, according to a news release issued Thursday by the Public Defender’s Office.
