A $15.4 million transformation of Boorman Park is nearing completion, with the 3.3-acre Richmond neighborhood park expected to reopen to the public in late fall, according to city officials.
The project at 2799 Maine Ave. included extensive environmental remediation and new sports, fitness and recreational amenities, the city said.
The site was previously used by a tile manufacturing business, requiring crews to excavate about 4 feet of soil and remove contaminated material. At the height of the cleanup, as many as 120 truckloads of soil were hauled away in a single day.
About $7.6 million of the project cost went toward environmental remediation, while $7.8 million funded park improvements, according to the city.
When it reopens, the park will feature a multipurpose sports field, basketball court, skate features, fitness area, walking loop, new playgrounds, picnic areas and a public restroom, city officials noted.
The city further said that the project also includes Bay-Friendly landscaping, stormwater treatment, energy-efficient lighting and recycled-material furnishings and play equipment.
Additional work, including solar lighting, landscaping, artwork and furnishings, is expected before the reopening.
The city also plans to repave nearby streets and upgrade a crosswalk serving the park.
Funding came from Proposition 68 Statewide Park Program funds, the city’s general fund and Caltrans Clean California funding.
