A gun buyback Saturday in Santa Rosa collected 583 firearms, including 198 handguns and 17 assault weapons, the Police Department said.

The buyback, funded by the Santa Rosa Police Foundation, offered $150 for functional handguns, rifles and shotguns, and $250 for assault weapons and privately made, unserialized “ghost guns.”

Police collected 353 long guns and 15 privately made guns, the department said.

The transactions were anonymous. No identification was required, and no questions were asked about the origin of the firearms. No public funds were used to pay for the weapons, police said.

“This is a true win for our community,” police Chief John Cregan said in a statement.

Gun buyback programs are a way to reduce the chances that guns can be stolen or used by people in a mental health crisis, he said.
