The East Bay SPCA has taken in five dogs from Lakeport to help free up space at Lake County Animal Care & Control following the Lucas Fire.
East Bay SPCA staff made a six-hour round trip Tuesday to transport the dogs, the organization said. The animals, Xena, Sandy, Dalton, Pugsley and Hammy, were already in the Lake County shelter and were not displaced by the fire.
The dogs will receive medical and behavioral evaluations and spay or neuter surgeries before being made available for adoption through the East Bay SPCA.
The organization regularly accepts animals from shelters across the Bay Area and beyond. It took in 1,034 animals through shelter-transfer partnerships last year, according to the SPCA.
East Bay SPCA also encouraged pet owners to prepare for emergencies by keeping a pet-specific emergency kit with food, water, identification and veterinary records.
