A new five-acre waterfront park combining Embarcadero Plaza and Sue Bierman Park will be known as Embarcadero Park, while the current Embarcadero Plaza will be renamed Art Agnos Plaza, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission announced Thursday.
The commission approved the names and a donor recognition program for the project, with the plaza honoring former Mayor Art Agnos, whose administration supported removing the earthquake-damaged Embarcadero Freeway and reconnecting downtown with the waterfront.
The commission also recommended renaming the northern section of the park Sue Bierman Commons, honoring the longtime open-space advocate and former supervisor.
The change requires approval from the Board of Supervisors because the current name is established in the Park Code, according to a press release issued Thursday.
The redesigned park will include lawns and gardens, picnic and dining areas, performance and recreation spaces, improved pedestrian connections, an enclosed dog play area, and gathering spaces for civic events.
The project is expected to break ground in late 2026 and be completed in early 2028, commission officials said. It includes $18 million in public funding and $24.5 million in private commitments and services.
