In addition to a heat advisory this week, officials have issued a smog alert and are warning coastal residents of minor coastal flooding.

A Spare the Air alert has been issued for Wednesday by the Bay Area Air District, with concentrations of ozone expected to be unhealthy. Ozone is a reactive gas that acts as a protective shield against ultraviolet rays in the high atmosphere, but it forms harmful smog at ground level, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Her position is supported by the California local news fellowship, a statewide initiative spearheaded by UC Berkeley aimed at supporting local news platforms. While a student at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism (c’23), Ruth developed stories about the social and environmental circumstances of contaminated watersheds around the Great Lakes, Mississippi River and Florida’s Lake Okeechobee.
