A 59-year-old woman and her dog were tragically killed Monday night after being struck by a car and a GoFundMe has been started to raise money for the woman’s sons.
Mary Murphy, 59, was crossing the road in a marked crosswalk with her dog, Andre, near Novato Boulevard and St. Paul Circle when she was struck by an eastbound sedan driven by an 18-year-old man shortly before 9 p.m., police said.
Murphy was rushed to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Andre also passed away.
The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. The Novato Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Team is handling the collision investigation and did not believe impairment was a factor in the collision.
According to the GoFundMe Page for the cause, Murphy worked at the Safeway in Mill Valley for over 30 years, anchoring the city’s community with her smile and warmth.
Prior to her death, Murphy had long been the sole provider for her sons — Emmett Murphy, 23, and Shane Murphy, 21 — since their father passed away when they were children, the GoFundMe page said.

Money is being raised to help Murphy’s grieving sons pay for funeral and burial costs, food and other living expenses amid their sudden financial hardship.
As of Friday night, the GoFundMe page had raised $119,389 of its $140,000 goal.
Organizers have also created a meal train, where people can volunteer to provide the boys with food.
