The Union City City Council has voted unanimously to place a measure on the November ballot that would extend the city’s existing tax on the use of utilities.
The Utility Users Tax is a 5% tax on electricity, natural gas, telecommunications, and video services that was instituted after voters approved Measure WW in the November 2020 election.
The tax will expire at the end of 2028, unless voters approve the measure in the Nov. 3 election, which would extend the tax until the end of 2037.
Qualifying low-income residents and senior residents over the age of 70 are exempt from the tax.
Since its implementation, the tax has generated approximately $7 million annually in General Fund revenue, according to a news release issued by the city. The revenue is used for city services like public safety, youth activities, and programs for seniors.
