The San Francisco Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam in which callers posing as sheriff’s deputies tell families they can secure the early release of an incarcerated loved one in exchange for payment.
Authorities said Friday that scammers would claim inmates qualify for an early release program because of jail overcrowding and demand fees for ankle monitors, court costs or processing.
