Repairs on the Mare Island Causeway Bridge have been held up following the discovery that rare birds are nesting in nearby marshland.
The California black rail, described as a secretive sparrow-sized bird, is listed as a threatened species — meaning it is at risk of going extinct — by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
