Hilton, Becerra hold top two slots in crowded California governor race; Steyer in third

CALIFORNIA’S GUBERNATORIAL PRIMARY came to a close Tuesday as voters chose from an extensive field of candidates hoping to replace termed-out Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.

With nearly half of the state’s precincts partially reporting as of 9:16 p.m., Steve Hilton led the field with 26.8% of the vote, Xavier Becerra was a close second at 25.8%, while Tom Steyer was further back in third place at 19.7%.
