The San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education unanimously approved John L. Davis Jr. as deputy superintendent of educational services during its Tuesday meeting.
Davis will assume the role on July 1, district officials said.
Davis brings more than 30 years of experience in urban education systems, including leadership positions with Baltimore City Public Schools and DC Public Schools. He previously served as chief of schools in Baltimore and as interim chancellor and chief of schools in Washington, D.C.
District officials said Davis’ background in academic achievement and instructional leadership aligns with SFUSD’s goals of improving third-grade literacy, eighth-grade math proficiency, and college and career readiness.
Superintendent Maria Su said Davis has a strong record of leading instructional improvement and supporting schools, teachers, and families.
