Concord’s City Council approved the appointment of the next city manager, Jerome “Jay” Wilverding, with his term set to begin on June 22.

The City Council authorized the employment agreement of Wilverding on Tuesday. He will replace longtime City Manager Valerie Barone, who is scheduled to retire in June.

Wilverding, a Pennsylvania native with more than 25 years of financial and management experience in the public and private sectors, most recently served as county administrator for San Joaquin County, where he managed a $2.9 billion budget and about 8,000 employees, city officials said.

Wilverding has worked in local government since 2010, including serving as chief accountant for Contra Costa County.

“I look forward to leading the city of Concord to continue to meet the needs of the community and make it a great place to live, work and raise family,” Wilverding said.

Concord Mayor Laura Nakamura said the city expects Wilverding’s experience to help maintain its services while bringing new ideas to the role.

“We are happy to appoint Jay to this position as his experience and expertise will bring a fresh perspective to the city and help us to continue to provide the highest quality of services our residents expect,” Nakamura said.
