Berkeley police are urging residents and visitors to follow safety guidelines as the use of personal mobility devices continues to grow.
Berkeley officials highlighted the increasing popularity of e-scooters, electric skateboards and other alternatives to driving, alongside public transit, biking, and walking.
To promote safer travel, the city this week released six tips for operating personal mobility devices responsibly.
Authorities emphasized the importance of wearing a properly fitted helmet to reduce the risk of head injuries. They advised riders not to carry passengers, noting that these devices are designed for single users.
Riders are also encouraged to slow down at intersections and remain alert to vehicles, pedestrians, and other riders, as such areas pose a higher risk for collisions.
Following traffic signs and signals is essential, officials said, including stopping at red lights and yielding when required.
Police further recommend traveling in the same direction as vehicle traffic and using bike lanes whenever possible. Riding against traffic is both dangerous and illegal, according to authorities.
In most cases, riders should avoid sidewalks unless local regulations allow it, as sidewalks are intended primarily for pedestrians, police said.
