Jose Cisneros, the elected treasurer of San Francisco, has become the first non-lawyer to chair the State Bar of California.
Cisneros, who was named to the board of trustees by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2019, was appointed to chair the organization Friday by the California Supreme Court.
Since 2004, Cisneros has served as San Francisco’s banker and chief investment officer, managing all tax and revenue collection, according to the state bar.
The Supreme Court appointed another non-attorney, Mark Toney, to be the bar’s vice-chair.
