Authorities are investigating a weekend fire that significantly damaged the football field at Mt. Diablo High School in Concord.

Concord police and Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crews responded Sunday morning to a report of a fire on the newly installed synthetic turf field at the school located at 2450 Grant St.

Investigators found surveillance footage showing what appears to be several people, possibly juveniles, who set off fireworks on the field the night before.

The fire damaged the center logo on the field, according to a letter school principal Markell McCain sent to the campus community Monday.

“We recognize the significant impact this has on our students and athletic programs. Our immediate priority is to support our students, teams and coaches and to begin planning for restoration,” McCain wrote.

The Mt. Diablo High football team was supposed to host the first game of its season this coming Friday against Terra Linda High School from San Rafael, but the game has been moved to Concord High School.

Mt. Diablo High’s football team wrote on social media Tuesday to announce the location change for the game and gave a “huge thank you to Concord High and Concord High Football for lending us a hand during difficult times.”
