The city of Novato is asking local artists to submit applications for a utility box beautification project aimed at sprucing up the city’s downtown area.
In partnership with the Novato Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Novato Business Association, the city is looking for submissions that highlight the city’s “rich heritage, natural beauty and community spirit,” according to an announcement sent out Monday.
The project, dubbed “A Vision for the Present,” will turn seven utility boxes into points of civic pride and is open to all — with priority consideration given to local artists.
“Artists will draw inspiration from Novato’s natural landscapes, cultural moments, historic landmarks, and vibrant community life,” according to the announcement.
The city’s Recreation, Cultural and Community Services Advisory Commission will review applications and select the artists sometime between the proposal deadline of Feb. 21 and the end of March.
The artistic transformation of the utility boxes will happen between April and May, ending with a community celebration and unveiling.
People can visit the city’s website for more information about the contest. Selected artists will receive up to $850 for materials and supplies.
