Jackie Fielder has won the race for the District 9 seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and her top challenger has conceded defeat.
Fielder, a former San Francisco State University educator who co-founded the San Francisco Public Bank Coalition and describes herself as “a Latina renter and Democratic Socialist,” had 15,802 votes after six rounds of ranked choice voting compared to 10,927 for her closest competitor, Trevor Chandler, according to the latest results released by the city’s Department of Elections on Sunday.
The race in Tuesday’s election was to replace Hillary Ronen, who was termed out after eight years in office. District 9 includes the Mission District as well as the Portola and Bernal Heights neighborhoods, among others.
Chandler, who described himself as a public school teacher and LGBTQ civil rights activist, on Sunday said he called Fielder to congratulate her on her victory.
“Too many in D9 feel ignored by an entrenched establishment more interested in ideological purity than improving the quality of life for our residents,” he wrote on social media. “While unsuccessful, our campaign was able to give voice to those who simply want City Hall to work for them and be serious about their safety, housing, schools, and small businesses.”
Fielder on Thursday had already declared victory in the race.
“To every single supporter, every neighbor, every small dollar donor, every person who put up a sign, every volunteer: I am honored and humbled to represent you. This isn’t just my victory — it’s our victory,” she said.
