Chief Mitchell hands over reins of leadership at Oakland PD — but it’s only for a few weeks

Oakland Police Chief Floyd Mitchell has handed over his responsibilities to Acting Chief James Beere while he attends state-mandated training, police said this week.

Mitchell, a former police chief in Lubbock, Texas, was appointed in March to replace Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong, whom Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao fired in early 2023.
