An item on the agenda for Manteca City Council’s meeting last week proposes prohibiting loitering at certain public places.
The proposal, which is not yet up for a final vote by councilmembers, would ban loitering at places such as community centers, recreation facilities, and school property.
The City Council in February added loitering restrictions to the city’s municipal code for private property owners and businesses. According to agenda documents, loitering refers to “the act of remaining upon posted property without the permission of the owner or person in lawful possession.”
The new proposed ordinance says loitering “has also become a growing problem at certain public areas” so they would be added to the municipal code “to ensure that the community has the opportunity to fully use and enjoy the city’s community centers, recreation facilities, and school property for education and recreation purposes.”
Anyone who violates the rules could face a misdemeanor.
If adopted, the new changes will be put into place 30 days afterward.
The council’s meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at 1001 W. Center St. in Manteca.
