Blaming staff vacancies for the trial delays that led to last week’s dismissal of 70 misdemeanor cases in San Francisco Superior Court, dozens of county court workers rallied outside the San Francisco Hall of Justice and the Civic Center Courthouse. 

A statement by the workers’ union Service Employees International Union Local 1021 said that staffing levels were not enough to manage the number of cases in court.

Ruth Dusseault is an investigative reporter and multimedia journalist focused on environment and energy. Her position is supported by the California local news fellowship, a statewide initiative spearheaded by UC Berkeley aimed at supporting local news platforms. While a student at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism (c’23), Ruth developed stories about the social and environmental circumstances of contaminated watersheds around the Great Lakes, Mississippi River and Florida’s Lake Okeechobee.
