Monterey County spends a sliver of cannabis tax revenue on youth drug education: report

Monterey County has collected more than $70 million is tax revenue from legalized cannabis sales since 2018, but has spent just $93,000 on youth drug education programs — which was a top priority of county residents. A new civil grand jury report recommends corrective action, and suggests that tax revenue is likely to fall in the coming years as the county's cannabis industry continues to flounder. Monterey County collected more than $70 million in marijuana taxes but spent just $93,000 for youth drug education — the top priority set by residents — according to a civil grand jury report.

Some of the largest expenditures the grand jury noted were as much as $12 million for COVID-19 services and recovery, and up to $8 million in investments in the Laguna Seca Raceway, which was recently leased by a private entity.
