At last, a new police chief for Oakland: Thao appoints Floyd Mitchell to lead department

Oakland's new Chief of Police Floyd Mitchell hails From Kansas City, Missouri, which he likens to the East Bay city he will soon be responsible for protecting. Mitchell said Wednesday that he plans to reach out to the community and city leaders in his first 100 days to get to know "where we can get better and how we go about getting better." Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao announced Friday that she has appointed Floyd Mitchell, a former police chief in Lubbock, Texas, as the city’s new top cop.

After more than a year without a permanent replacement for former Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong, whom she fired in early 2023, Thao selected Mitchell from a list of four candidates presented to the mayor last month by the Oakland Police Commission.
