San Leandro has appointed its first-ever director for its new recreation and parks department, city officials said this week.

Vicente Zuniga “brings a wealth of experience and a demonstrated commitment to community enrichment and partnerships to this newly created position,” according to a statement from the city manager’s office.

“We are thrilled to welcome Vicente to our team,” said City Manager Fran Robustelli. “His extensive experience, collaborative leadership style, and deep roots in San Leandro make him the perfect person to lead our new Recreation and Parks Department. We are confident that he will create innovative and inclusive programs that serve the needs of all our residents.”

Zuniga’s position will start on March 16, city officials said.

“I am honored to be appointed as San Leandro’s first Recreation and Parks Director,” Zuniga said. “I am passionate about creating vibrant and accessible parks and recreation opportunities for all residents. I look forward to collaborating with the community and staff to develop innovative programs that meet the diverse needs of our city.”

Before his appointment, Zuniga served in the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District for 22 years. He is a lifelong resident of San Leandro, where he lives with his wife and three sons, city officials said.
