Proposed legislation would prohibit blanket policies against renting units to pet owners

A proposed California state bill wants to prohibit landlords from having blanket policies against renting to pet owners and restrict inquiries about pets until after a renter's application is approved, but it raises concerns from apartments association over potential issues for landlords and the financial burden of pet-related damages. Renters with pets face challenges finding landlords who will rent to them at all, let alone without extra costs, but a new state bill seeks to change that.

Assembly Bill 2216, introduced Tuesday by Assemblymember Matt Haney, D-San Francisco, would prohibit landlords from having blanket policies against renting to pet owners.
