San Mateo County officials have celebrated the groundbreaking of an apartment complex in East Palo Alto intended to help solve affordable housing struggles in the area earlier this month, according to a press release from the county. 

The project is meant to serve people earning between 3 and 50 percent of the area’s median income. This is about $39,000 for a one-person household but could be as much as $147,180 for larger families. Qualified tenants will pay up to 30 percent of their gross income on rent.
