No later than Dec. 28. That’s the deadline set by the state for San Francisco to get its housing policy in order, or else it will face consequences. 

The city missed a Nov. 25 deadline to make changes that would streamline its permitting process, a deadline determined by the California Department of Housing and Community Development, or HCD. The date was set after an extensive state-funded study of city practices was done earlier this year, known as the San Francisco Housing Policy and Practice Review.

Ruth Dusseault is an investigative reporter and multimedia journalist focused on environment and energy. Her position is supported by the California local news fellowship, a statewide initiative spearheaded by UC Berkeley aimed at supporting local news platforms. While a student at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism (c’23), Ruth developed stories about the social and environmental circumstances of contaminated watersheds around the Great Lakes, Mississippi River and Florida’s Lake Okeechobee.
