The San Francisco YMCA’s YBike program is in line for $1 million in state funding to bring bicycles, maintenance and safety education to children and families for 10 years, Assemblymember Phil Ting said.

The money will help replace aging bikes and vehicles, create a mobile repair vehicle to train young mechanics, and bolster bike fleets used in public school physical education.

“YBike is an incredible program that supports San Francisco youth becoming skilled bicyclists,” Ting (D-San Francisco), chair of the Assembly Budget Committee, said in a press release on Saturday.

Jamie Bruning-Miles, president and chief executive officer of the YMCA of San Francisco, said the YBike program can improve education and employment opportunities for disadvantaged youths.
