The San Leandro Family Aquatic Center will be closed this summer due to critical repairs that have been delayed by supply-chain shortages, city officials announced.

An inspection found the pool, located at Washington Manor Park, is unsafe for public use due to damages to the concrete deck, pool surface, play structures, the splash pad and big slide stairs, according to a release from the city.

Nationwide supply-chain shortages, along with challenges in scheduling a pool resurfacing contractor, have made it impossible to open the facility this summer, city officials said.

Mayor Juan Gonzalez said the pool’s closure this summer is disappointing, but added that the city has made investments at both Farrelly Pool and the Boys & Girls Club, which will give residents “a number of alternative options for swimming this summer at wonderfully renovated facilities.”

The two sites will offer additional programs this summer to offset the impact the of aquatic center closure. Expanded swim times for lap swim, adult recreational swim, family recreational swim, and swim lessons will also be available at the two pools.

Farrelly Pool, at 864 Dutton Ave., will open early in the season for weekend family recreational swims starting May 27, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., through Sunday, Sept. 3.

Farrelly Pool will be open on Memorial Day, May 29, and Labor Day, Sept. 4, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. In addition to the expanded swim times and programs, the city is also bringing back summer family swim passes.
